Count it, feel it, then forget the count.

15 years teaching and performing dance — trained in Bharatanatyam, fluent in contemporary. I give students the technique to be free, not fenced. From a six-year-old's first plié to a graduating soloist's audition piece, I teach the count until the body owns it, then I teach them to let it go.

Count it, feel it, then forget the count

I started Bharatanatyam at five because my grandmother insisted, resented it until I was fourteen, and fell in love with it the first time I danced a piece I actually understood. That arc — resistance, then discipline, then joy — is exactly what I now walk my own students through, and it's why I never let a beginner quit in the resentment phase.

For fifteen years I've taught across the range: a temple-arts syllabus, a contemporary company's junior wing, and a school dance programme that sends a dozen students a year into serious training. I still perform, because a teacher who has left the stage forgets what she's asking of the ones still on it.

If your school or company wants a dance teacher who is a genuine performer, rigorous about technique, and able to move between classical and contemporary without dropping either, my show reel and references are ready. Give me your class that thinks it 'can't dance' — those are the ones I love to prove wrong.

Technique frees you, it doesn't cage you

People think technique and expression are opposites — that rules kill the art. They have it backwards. Technique is what earns you the freedom to stop thinking and start dancing. I drill the count, the line, the placement until they live in the body, because only then can a dancer forget all of it on stage and simply mean what they move. Discipline first, so joy can be automatic.

  1. GroundPosture, alignment, breath. Every form I teach starts from a body that knows where it is in space.
  2. CountRhythm before choreography. Students learn to hear the structure so the steps have somewhere to live.
  3. PhraseWe build movement into phrases with intention — not steps memorised, but ideas expressed.
  4. ReleaseThen perform. Once the body owns the count, we let go of it and dance like it was always theirs.

What they say

FROM THE WINGS · 01

My daughter begged to quit at eleven. Tara didn't push — she made the class matter. Two years on she's dancing solos and glowing.

Tara moved me from strict classical into contemporary without ever making me feel I was betraying my training. That's rare skill.
