Curiosity is the catalyst. I just lower the activation energy.

14 years teaching Chemistry to Grades 9–12. My students burn, bubble, precipitate and titrate before they memorise a single equation — because a reaction you've smelled is a reaction you never forget.

Everything is chemistry. Everything.

I fell for chemistry at eleven, when a teacher dropped potassium permanganate into glycerine and the bench caught fire in the most educational way possible. I finished a Ph.D. in organic synthesis, spent two years at a pharma bench, and then admitted what I'd known since that fire: I wanted to be the person holding the demonstration.

Fourteen years on, my lab runs like a kitchen and reads like a courtroom — everything gets tested, everything gets logged. My students have standardised their own solutions since Grade 9, run a soap-and-ester micro-business for the school fete, and walked out with 278 NEET and JEE qualifications. The board average sits at 95%; the safety record sits at perfect.

If your school wants a chemistry department where the lab is used weekly instead of photographed for the brochure — where children argue about mechanisms at lunch — mix me in. I bring my own flame-test kit.

Lower the activation energy

Chemistry has a reputation problem: children meet it as a wall of equations before they ever see anything change colour. I run it in the right order. First the flash, the smell, the precipitate — then the mole concept arrives as the grammar of something they've already witnessed. Lower the activation energy and every student reacts.

  1. IgniteEvery unit opens with a demonstration — flame tests, clock reactions, something that visibly happens.
  2. QuestionWhy did it turn blue? Why the fizz? Students write hypotheses before touching theory.
  3. FormaliseNow equations, moles and mechanisms — as the notation for what the bench just showed.
  4. TitrateBoard and NEET-grade problem practice, error logs, and one lab skill certified per term.

Head of Chemistry (PGT)

Chettinad Vidyashram, Chennai

Lead a five-teacher department. Moved practicals from twice-a-term to weekly, built the salt-analysis olympiad that four schools now join, and run the NEET/JEE chemistry stream — 278 qualifiers with a 95% board average alongside.

2013 — 2017

PGT Chemistry

PSBB Senior Secondary School, Chennai

Grades 11–12 chemistry; started the ester micro-business (soaps and scents for the school fete) that quietly teaches stoichiometry, costing and honesty about yields.

2011 — 2013

Research Chemist → Teacher

Pharma R&D bench, then classroom

Two years of process chemistry; discovered that explaining a mechanism was more satisfying than running it. Left with a Ph.D., excellent glassware discipline, and a demonstration habit.

Weekly practicals sounded like a logistics nightmare. She made it run like clockwork, and our science admissions enquiries doubled.

I got through NEET organic because she taught mechanisms like gossip — who attacks whom, and why. I'm in med school. It still works.
