First they find their voice. Then they can't stop singing.

16 years teaching Music across Grades 1–12 — choir, concert band, keyboard lab and theory. My students don't perform once a year at Annual Day; they rehearse like it's oxygen and perform like it's a habit. Music as a daily practice, not a party trick.

Every child arrives with an instrument: themselves.

I grew up in a Goa house where tuning a guitar was a household chore like filling water. I assumed every child had music the way they had lunch — and my first week as a teacher, meeting fifteen-year-olds who'd been told to mime in choir, radicalised me permanently. Sixteen years later, my job is repealing that instruction, one child at a time.

My programme runs on volume — of participation, not decibels. Three choirs, a concert band that arranges its own Bollywood medleys, a keyboard lab with 40 stations, and 120 concerts staged everywhere from proper auditoriums to the school corridor on a Tuesday. Nine Trinity distinctions last year; more importantly, zero children mouthing the words.

If your school wants music to be a daily subject with a heartbeat — exams passed, festivals won, and the staff choir slightly too competitive — raise the baton. I audition well.

03 · The rehearsal

Nobody sits out. Nobody.

Every school has 'the musical kids' — and a much larger crowd convinced music isn't for them, usually because someone once told them to mouth the words. I refuse the sorting. In my room everyone claps, everyone sings, everyone reads a little notation — and the 'non-musical' child who nails their first harmony makes a face I will never get tired of.

  1. ListenEvery class opens with two minutes of real listening — one piece, eyes closed, no commentary until it ends.
  2. ImitateCall-and-response before notation. The ear leads; the page follows. It's how every musician in history started.
  3. ReadNotation arrives as a map of what they can already sing — never as a gate they must pass first.
  4. PerformSmall stages constantly: corridor concerts, assembly slots, retirement homes. Performance as habit, not event.

2016 — PRESENT

Head of Music

Sacred Heart School, Panaji

Built the department from one dusty piano to three choirs, a concert band and a 40-station keyboard lab. 120 concerts staged, nine Trinity distinctions in 2025, and the state youth choir has taken our students six years running.

2011 — 2016

Music Teacher

Don Bosco High School, Margao

Grades 1–10 general music; started the corridor-concert tradition and an inter-house choir competition fierce enough to require conflict-of-interest rules.

2009 — 2011

Freelance Musician → Teacher

Session work & church choirs, Goa

Guitar, keys and choral direction; discovered that teaching a child their first chord beat any session gig, and followed that feeling into school.

Abolish the miming instruction

Somewhere a teacher is telling a child to mouth the words. The case for full-voice choirs and how to tune them anyway.

The corridor concert

Notices from the stalls

My daughter was a certified 'mouth-the-words' child from her old school. She sang a solo at assembly last month. I filmed it through tears.

Music went from a Friday afternoon filler to the department parents mention at admissions. The corridor concerts stop foot traffic.

He let our band arrange our own medley and then made us rehearse it 40 times. I'm at Berklee now. The 40 times is why.
