Debit the doubt, credit the understanding.

14 years teaching Accountancy to commerce students — turning the subject they're most scared of into the one they top. I don't teach entries to be memorised; I teach the logic underneath, so a balance sheet stops being a mystery and starts being obvious. Board results follow, but understanding comes first.

Debit the doubt, credit the understanding

I trained as an accountant and discovered, filling in for a friend's tuition class, that I liked explaining balance sheets more than preparing them. Fourteen years later I've never looked back — there's nothing like watching a student who 'can't do accounts' suddenly see that it all just balances.

The mistake most teaching makes is starting with formats — here's how a balance sheet looks, memorise it. I start with the logic: the accounting equation, the reason behind debit and credit, the story a set of books tells. Once that clicks, students stop memorising and start reasoning, and the marks take care of themselves. Nine of my students have scored a perfect 100.

If your school or coaching institute wants an accountancy teacher who delivers board results without reducing the subject to rote formats — comfortable across CBSE, state and ISC, and able to take a scared commerce student to a confident one — my results and references are ready to review.

Accounts always balance — so does good teaching

Commerce students arrive terrified — convinced accountancy is maths in disguise and they're bad at maths. It isn't, and they aren't. Accountancy is a language of logic where every entry has a reason; teach the reason and the entry becomes obvious. I refuse to let students memorise formats they don't understand. Understand the 'why' of debit and credit and the entire syllabus unlocks — and, not by coincidence, the marks arrive.

  1. GroundThe accounting equation first. Everything — every entry, every statement — is just this one identity, kept in balance.
  2. ReasonFor every transaction we ask 'what came in, what went out, and why' before writing a single entry. Logic before format.
  3. BuildJournal to ledger to trial balance to final accounts — built up as one connected story, not disconnected chapters.
  4. ApplyThen past papers under exam conditions. Speed and accuracy on the format, once the understanding is solid.

I scored 100 in Accountancy and I still use the 'what came in, what went out' habit he drilled into us. Best teacher I had.
