I became a geography teacher because of a monsoon. Class 8, Kerala, the year the river ate the road to school — and our teacher, instead of skipping the chapter, walked us to the bank and taught floodplains standing on one. I have been trying to be that teacher ever since.
Thirteen years in, my classes still start with a question you can stand on: why is this market here, why does this street flood, why does the sea eat this beach and spare that one. Maps come next, marks follow.

The expedition loop · every chapter, same route
Geography is the only subject where the textbook is printed at 1:50,000 scale and the real thing is outside the window. I teach students to move between the two — map to ground, ground to map — until neither feels foreign.
- Observe — the school gate is a land-use case study. So is the flooded street.
- Map it — sketch maps by hand before Google Earth. Hands remember scale.
- Question — why is the river THERE? Why is the market where the buses stop?
- Explain — write it like a geographer: claim, evidence, map reference.
