Everyone can draw. I just get out of the way.

14 years teaching fine art — and still making it. I take the student who says 'I can't even draw a straight line' and show them that seeing, not talent, is the skill nobody taught them. Rigorous on fundamentals, generous with encouragement, and honest in the crit.

Everyone can draw. I just get out of the way.

I nearly quit art at fifteen because a teacher wrote 'lacks natural ability' on a report. I kept going out of spite, earned an MFA, and have shown in nine solo exhibitions since. That report card is the reason I teach the way I do — no child leaves my room believing they 'can't'.

For fourteen years I've run studio programmes alongside my own practice, because a teacher who has stopped making loses the thing worth passing on. I've placed over forty students into foundation and degree art courses, but I'm just as proud of the accountant who takes my adult evening class and finally, at forty, believes their own hands.

If your school or studio wants an art teacher who is a serious practitioner, rigorous about fundamentals, and constitutionally incapable of crushing a beginner, my portfolio and my references are ready. Give me your reluctant class — those are the ones worth teaching.

Seeing is the whole skill

Art class is where most people are told, gently, that they're 'not creative' — and they believe it for life. I refuse to be that teacher. Drawing is a skill of observation, and observation can be taught to anyone. I teach the eye first, the hand second, and the confidence throughout. The gifted kids look after themselves; my job is the child who's convinced they can't.

  1. LookBefore a single line, we learn to actually see — edges, negative space, proportion, light. The eye is the instrument.
  2. MarkFundamentals without fear. Gesture, tone, structure — the grammar that makes every later choice possible.
  3. ExploreThen we open the toolbox: colour, medium, composition. Play with intent, guided but not fenced in.
  4. CritiqueThe honest, kind crit. What's working, what's next — spoken to the work, never at the person.

What they say

From the crit · 01

She told my daughter her drawings mattered, and something switched on. Two years later she's at art foundation. That's Leela.

Rigorous and warm at once — rare in an art teacher. Her students arrive at foundation actually knowing how to see.

I joined her adult class at 42 convinced I had no talent. She proved me wrong with a stick of charcoal and a lot of patience.
