The subject that studies the one reading it.

12 years teaching Psychology — the subject teenagers arrive at expecting mind-reading and leave respecting as a science. I teach the research, the rigour and the real applications, and I hold the space for the wellbeing questions that this subject, uniquely, brings into the room. Evidence first, empathy throughout.

The subject that studies the one reading it

I trained as a clinical psychologist and chose the classroom because I wanted to reach people before crisis, not only after. Teaching senior-school Psychology turned out to be exactly that: a chance to give five hundred teenagers the vocabulary and the evidence base to understand their own minds — and to gently correct the ocean of pop-psychology nonsense they arrive carrying.

I teach the subject as the science it is: research methods, ethics, the difference between a study and a headline. But Psychology is unlike any other subject on the timetable — sooner or later a student sees themselves in the material, and I've learned to hold that moment with care. Sixty-plus of my students have gone on to psychology degrees; several now practise.

If your school wants a Psychology teacher who delivers rigorous board results, models scientific thinking, and is genuinely equipped for the wellbeing conversations this subject invites — with clinical training and, if useful, counselling capacity — my references and results are ready to review.

Evidence over opinion, always

Students sign up for Psychology expecting to learn how to read minds and are mildly disappointed to find graphs and research designs. Good. Psychology is a science, and I teach it as one — hypotheses, evidence, method — precisely because the subject matter is so personal that only rigour keeps it honest. But it's also the one class where a student may quietly recognise their own anxiety in a chapter, so I teach the science and I keep the door open.

  1. QuestionEvery topic starts as a real question about behaviour — why we forget, why we conform — before it becomes a theory.
  2. MethodHow do we actually know? Research methods and ethics run through everything; correlation is not causation, always.
  3. EvidenceWe test claims against studies, not vibes. Students learn to spot pop-psych myths and demand the evidence.
  4. ApplyThen application — to wellbeing, relationships, learning. The science meets the life it's actually about.

She taught my daughter to think, not just to score — and scored 96 anyway. The way she talks about the mind is a gift.

I'm a clinical psychology student because of her class. She showed me it was a real science, not the stuff on Instagram.
